Rennyo

Rennyo was the eighth Patriarch of the Honganji Temple. His interpretation of True Pure Land Buddhism teachings influenced Honganji doctrine to the point where he was considered the second founder of the sect by his followers. This was because of his efforts to spread his teachings, negotiate conflicts with the court, warriors, and other religious authorities, and build institutions. His power threatened many people, including the monks of Enryakuji, which led to the destruction of the Honganji Temple and made one of the largest institutions in Japan for True Pure Land Buddhism. Concerning the ikko ikki, Rennyo did not want any association with them. He would set rules to separate him and his followers from them. As much as Rennyo wanted no link to the ikko ikki, his teachings and letters influenced the ideology that drove the ikko leagues and their actions.
