Emperor Go-Nara

$300,000.00

Emperor Go Nara reigned as emperor for the first half of the Sengoku period from January 26, 1495, to September 27, 1557. He was not officially installed as emperor because the imperial court was so poor that they had no money for an enthronement. Thanks to the generous donation of more than 2,000 kan by daimyo Ouchi Yoshitaka, Emperor Go Nara's enthronement happened in 1536. Of all the Sengoku emperors, Go Nara was the only one who kept a personal diary that was roughly written only in a year and a few days. Regarding the low-ranking courtier Matsugi Hisanao, the emperor was essential for Matsugi to keep his inheritance of the Niimi family's succession by issuing an imperial decree. In September of 1551, several courtiers tried to move the emperor to Yamaguchi, a city within the Suo Province ruled by the Ouchi clan, to get him away from the capital, Kyoto. The operation did not work because of a coup within the Ouchi clan between the daimyo Ouchi Yoshitaka and Sue Takafusa. This incident became known as the Tainei-ji incident. Emperor Go Nara died six years later.
