Ashikaga Yoshiteru
Ashikaga Yoshiteru (1536-1565) was the 13th shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate, reigning under the rule of both Go-Nara and Ogimachi. Under his rule, the shogun’s authority and finances were extremely poor; many daimyo surrounding him attempted to use his authority for their own good. Surprisingly over time, Yoshiteru was able to extend the shogun’s reach after contacting several warriors all over Japan. He was seen as an active player, and through negotiations with warlords such as Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin, the authority of the institution was being restored slightly (albeit in a much-weakened state in comparison to pre-Onin War). In fact, there is especial evidence of correspondence between Uesugi and Yoshiteru, where the former often asked for prestigious privileges and justifications for his authority and subjugation of rivals in eastern Japan (such as the Takeda and Hojo). Even with the ever-important Nobunaga, Yoshiteru held direct meetings with the warlord and bestowed upon him the official title of military governor of Owari – his home province. His experiences, and the way he was able to reassert authority, show a shogunate that could claim a legitimate position in a time of chaos.
